Right on the square: the Plaza del Triunfo
Seville Cathedral and the Giralda
Directly opposite the Alcázar. The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, begun in 1402, with Christopher Columbus's tomb inside and the Giralda above it: the Almohad minaret of 1184–1198, now the bell tower, climbed by ramps rather than stairs for a view over the city. General Archive of the Indies (free)
The Renaissance building between the Cathedral and the Alcázar. It was begun in 1584 as Seville's merchants' exchange, and in 1785 King Charles III made it the archive for Spain's records of the Americas: some 80 million pages, from explorers' letters to colonial administration. It shares the UNESCO listing with the Alcázar and the Cathedral.
The tourist visit is free. Published hours are 9:30 – 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday and 10:00 – 14:00 on Sundays, closed Mondays; check the Ministry of Culture page before you go. It is a calm, cool half hour and pairs well with the Casa de la Contratación inside the Alcázar.
Two minutes away: Santa Cruz
The old Jewish quarter wraps around the Alcázar's walls: whitewashed lanes, small squares, the Murillo gardens and the Hospital de los Venerables. Free to wander. Full guide: Santa Cruz walking guide.
About 10 minutes: towards the river
Torre del Oro
A 13th-century watchtower on the bank of the Guadalquivir, built by the Almohads to guard the river port. It houses a small maritime museum. Its story connects with the Alcázar's: this river is why Seville controlled trade with the Americas.
The river walk
From the Torre del Oro you can walk along the Guadalquivir, and cross to Triana, the potters' and sailors' quarter on the other bank (see two days in Seville).

Plaza de España
A vast semicircular square built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, with a canal, bridges, and tiled alcoves representing Spain's provinces. Free and open. Best in the late afternoon.
María Luisa Park
The large park around Plaza de España, with shaded paths, fountains and pavilions. A welcome escape from the midday heat.
About 15 minutes: north
Casa de Pilatos
A 16th-century palace that mixes Mudéjar, Gothic and Renaissance styles, with courtyards and tilework that make a fine, quieter companion to the Alcázar. It charges its own admission.
Metropol Parasol (Las Setas)
A huge modern wooden canopy over the Plaza de la Encarnación, with a walkway on top and Roman remains beneath. A striking contrast after the medieval palaces.
