Ten minutes north of the Cathedral, a wooden canopy the size of a city block rises over the Plaza de la Encarnación. Officially it is the Metropol Parasol; everyone calls it las Setas, the mushrooms. You can walk underneath for nothing, and pay to go up on the walkway that runs along the top.

What it is
Designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer and completed in April 2011, the structure is about 150 by 70 metres, and 26 metres high, built of laminated timber and marketed as the largest wooden structure in the world. It covers a market, a plaza used for events, and an archaeological museum.
The contrast is the point of going: you spend the morning in a fourteenth-century palace and the evening on a piece of twenty-first-century architecture, half a mile apart.

Underneath: the Antiquarium
Digging the foundations turned up Roman and Islamic-period remains, and they were kept where they were found. The Antiquarium, in the basement, shows mosaics and walls of the Roman city under glass: a quiet, cool half hour, and the only place in Seville where you stand at the level of the Roman street.
When to go up
Sunset. The obvious answer, and the right one: the city turns gold and the Giralda catches the last light.
After dark, for the Aurora light show along the walkway, which runs in the evening in the warmer half of the year.
Not midday in summer. There is no shade up there.
