Real Alcázar Queue: How Long Is the Wait, and How to Skip It

There are two lines at the Real Alcázar, and only one of them is a problem. The ticket-office line, for people buying on the day, is the long one: it runs along the wall on Plaza del Triunfo, in the open, and in high season it can take an hour or more. The line for people who already have a timed ticket is a short wait for the security check.

So the one thing that saves the most time is simple: book a time slot before you go.

When the ticket line is at its worst

  • Spring and autumn, the busiest seasons in Seville, and especially Easter week.
  • Weekends and public holidays.
  • Mid-morning, when tour groups and late risers arrive together.

Travellers on the Rick Steves forum describe friends who could not book ahead in October and joined the line an hour before opening. That is the price of turning up without a ticket in a busy month.

Why it matters more here than elsewhere

The queue is outdoors and unshaded. In Seville's summer that is not just boring, it is hard work. If you cannot avoid queuing, go at opening (09:30), bring water and a hat, and do not plan it for midday.

Three ways to walk straight in

  1. An official timed ticket. €15.50 on the official shop. You still pass security, but you skip the ticket office. Most of the year a day or two ahead is enough; see how far ahead to book.
  2. A guided tour with priority access. The guide handles entry for the group. The Royal Alcázar tour with priority access costs from €37.40 and has free cancellation.
  3. A combined tour with the Cathedral. The Cathedral has its own queues; the Alcázar, Cathedral and Giralda tour covers both.

"Skip the line" does not mean "skip security"

Every visitor goes through the security check at the Puerta del León (Lion Gate), whatever ticket they hold. Keep bags small to get through faster; see visitor rules and tips.
