Upper Royal Quarters (Cuarto Real Alto): Worth €5.50?

The Upper Royal Quarters (Cuarto Real Alto) are the rooms the Spanish royal family still uses when it stays in Seville. Seeing them costs €5.50 on top of the €15.50 general ticket, in a small group at a fixed time. If you like furnished historic interiors, it is money well spent. If you came for the courtyards and gardens, you can skip it without missing the heart of the Alcázar.

How the visit works

You buy it as one ticket, Visita Real Alcázar + Cuarto Real Alto, on the official shop. The time printed on it is for the upstairs group; you can enter the rest of the Alcázar before it.

The practical details below come from visitors on the Rick Steves Travel Forum in 2024. They are not official rules, and they can change.

• Groups are small. One visitor counted 20 places per time slot, and their own group was just five people.
• The entrance is upstairs inside the palace, about five minutes' walk from the Puerta del León (Lion Gate). It is signposted and marked on the palace map.
• Be at the upstairs checkpoint 15 minutes early. The main gate still opens at 09:30, so an early upstairs slot means queuing at the gate first.
• Bags go in a locker before you go in. Bring a €1 coin; you get it back.

Is it worth it?

Add it if:

• this is your one visit to the Alcázar and you want all of it;
• you enjoy lived-in palaces, with furniture, clocks and portraits, more than empty halls;
• you have more than two hours in total.

Skip it if:

• your time is tight, or the only slots left clash with the best time for the gardens;
• your budget is tight. The general ticket already covers the palaces people travel for.

It sells out first

The Upper Royal Quarters are among the first things to sell out, especially the mid-morning slots. Book them together with your entry, as early as your plans allow. If they are gone, a guided tour of the main palace is a good way to still get the stories behind the rooms.
